The Ledge Movie

      The Ledge Movie

The Ledge is the first film in Hollywood history that puts an atheist into the hero role in a production that features A-list stars. It is written and directed by Matthew Chapman, the great-great-grandson of Charles Dawin, the scientist who discovered evolution, the biggest challenge to religion since Gallileo. The film was nominated for Best US Drama at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and stars Charlie HunnamSons of Anarchy, Liv TylerLord of the Rings, Tony, Emmy, and Golden Globe nominee, Patrick WilsonWatchmen, and Oscar nominee Terrence HowardCrash, Iron Man.

On the rooftop of a city skyscraper, Detective Hollis (Terrence Howard) pleads with Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) not to jump. What he does not know is that Gavin, an atheist, is involved in a deadly feud with Joe (Patrick Wilson), a Christian extremist. Joe’s wife, Shana, (Liv Tyler) is caught in the middle as Joe seeks to test Gavin’s faith or lack of it. Cutting between the present and the past, tension escalates as verbal shots give way to deadly threats in a race against time that neither God nor the police can stop. Along the way, the film provocatively explores the intellectual and emotional conflicts between religion and atheism.

Atheists make up 4% of the US population, and 12% of Americans have no religious affiliation, but we are the most marginalized major group in the country. According to a Gallup Poll, only 45% of Americans would vote for an atheist for President, 10% fewer than for muslims or gays.

And yet, bestselling books like The God Delusion, God is Not Great, and the Broadway play The Book of Mormon show that atheists are on the rise. The Ledge is the first Hollywood drama with an A-list cast to feature an openly atheist hero and a theme of religious conflict. Could this be the Brokeback Mountain moment for atheists?

Are you a non-believer? Stand up and be counted! Are you a believer who supports tolerance? The Ledge has partnered with This is Me: Atheist to create the world’s largest video forum on equality and acceptance for those who have no God. The best videos we’ll post here on the official movie website for all the film’s fans to see!

PA Nonbelievers at Jubilee Day

17 Jun

The largest one-day street fair on the East Coast, Jubilee Day, was held today in Mechanicsburg, PA. Among the merchants selling hot dogs and the carpenters trying to sell window treatments, are- of course- the typical religious propaganda booths.

I’m especially interested in the religious demographic close to home, so I made sure to stop at the stands and pick up a few pamphlets and other amusing material (except for an evangelical church group handing out Ray Comfort material…)

I was especially pleased to see the PA Nonbelievers also in attendance. Apparently they had been here last year as well, but I unfortunately hadn’t seen them. An outspoken group, I’ve seen PA Nonbelievers in the news quite a bit lately, namely for their “Pub Crawl; The search for Jesus” event, which took place on May 21- the supposed rapture date declared by Harold Camping.

If you’re from Pennsylvania or if you’d generally like to know more about atheism, you may wish to check out their website, and their forums- the latter of which I’ve found quite amusing, albeit not as active as I’d like.

**EDIT** Brian Fields, the webmaster of PA Nonbelievers, was kind enough to comment with the PA Nonbelievers Facebook page, available here.

Open Letter to LOGOS Christian Society of Edmonton

16 Jun

To whom it may concern:

I’m quite concerned with your opposition towards the development of LGBT and Sexual Identity policies within the Edmonton public school district. Reasons that your organizations cite for this opposition include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • [LGBT students must] be included, affirmed, and represented in an inclusive, positive, and respectful manner by all school personnel
  • and have their unique identities, families, cultures and communities valued and affirmed within all aspects of the school environment

As a public school, school personnel have no business imposing their personal beliefs on any child at any time during instructional periods, or during any school-affiliated event. This policy does not prevent any personnel from maintaining their own personal beliefs, it prevents one from imposing said beliefs upon LGBT students.

While members of your organization have the right to believe whatever you wish, it is not ethically correct to exclude, disrespect, or refuse to recognize LGBT students as equals in the public school environment. Personal beliefs may, of course, be maintained, but please refrain from bullying others based on the beliefs in question.

Public schools also have no business publicly endorsing any institution of religion.

I am disgusted with your attempts to exclude children from their peers, and blatant lack of respect for fellow humans. This policy attempts to take away the metaphoric stick organizations such as your own use to beat others with, and taking away this stick should not be considered bullying- it’s simply refusing to enable the abuser.

As a student, albeit outside the district in question, I implore you respect the sexual orientation of others within a neutral public school institution. Please keep your personal beliefs personal in such an environment.

Sincerely,

Eli.

Westside Church & Christian Life Center vandalized- FriendlyAtheist

15 Jun

I was quite pleased when I saw a new FriendlyAtheist.com post notification pop up in my twitter notification feed, and even happier to find out that the post was dedicated to calling out vandals who defaced the Westside Church & the Christian Life Center, both located in Bend, Oregon. At the end of the entry, Hemant Mehta- the primary author of TheFriendlyAtheist- set up a ChipIn! donation pool to help these churches pay for repairs required as a result of the vandalism.

I know many of you are uncomfortable giving money to a church, but I hope you who can find it in your heart to help them out in this case. They didn’t deserve this vandalism.

Let’s put the Golden Rule to work. When atheist billboards get vandalized, wouldn’t it be a nice gesture if theist groups offered to do the same for us?

It really is quite a lovely gesture on his part, and certainly one I agree with. However, some readers felt quite differently, and expressed that in the comments section. For example;

Ok… sorry, but I truly can’t find it in my heart to donate to this. True, they didn’t deserve the vandalism BUT… by giving my money to them I would be assisting them in their proselytization of others. It’s also why I have a hard time giving business to anyone that I know that is xtian and runs a business, because I know that the money I spend at their business will trickle down to a church and be used for proselytizing.

Hemant’s post specifically stated that any excess money raised will be donated to the Foundation Beyond Belief, a secular charity, and only the cost of the repairs will be given to the church. There will be no money from this fundraiser given or otherwise exploited for the use of church proselytizing.

Another comment;

“But the bottom line is that God is the one that’s going to get revenge — we aren’t.”

For that threatening message alone…for the fact that they believe the vandals deserve eternal punishment in hell…they won’t be getting my help. Sorry. My money, as little as I have, goes only to good causes that truly need it.

To help a church paint over some scribblings and replace bricks? Sorry, I have better things to donate toward.

The fact that one of those churches even made that statement, is- in my opinion- further reason to help them out. If they feel that ‘god is going to take his revenge’ for vandalizing their church, I think a good will gesture from a group of atheists is certainly in order.

‘Good causes that truly need it’- Apparently victims of crime don’t deserve help. I have a problem with labeling this as a “bad” cause, as so implied. I rarely doubt the sincerity of theists, and what they’re doing is “right” in their eyes, so to try to spin it in such a way that these people supposedly don’t deserve our help to recover from a crime just because they believe in something we think is bullshit is a horrible, pompous thing to say.

If you don’t want or don’t have to means to give to the cause, by all means don’t, but don’t try and cite disagreement as your reason for refusing to donate, especially in circumstances where none of the money is going to causes we disapprove of- it’s going to repair a building. Fairly certain the building is neutral to all of this.

Don’t say “oh, we derive our morals from the golden rule” and then refuse to help a victims of a crime on the grounds of disagreement, that’s blind hypocrisy- the same thing we claim theists do everyday.

Let’s not be petty, hypocritical misanthropes, shall we?

I’ll leave now with this;

I disapprove highly of the vandalism, but I refuse to ever give one cent of mine to a church ever again, unless I knew for a fact it was not going to go towards the brainwashing of others. I’m glad that there are better, less angry atheists out there though. Kudos to you all. <3

Open Letter to Rick Santorum

14 Jun

Mr. Santorum,

As a constituent, recent quotes of yours lead me to question and potentially oppose your candidacy for the presidency. Namely;

MR. GREGORY:  So even in a case of rape or incest, that would be taking a life?

SEN. SANTORUM:  That would be taking a life, and, and I believe that, that any doctor who performs an abortion–that–I would advocate that any doctor that performs an abortion should be criminally charged for doing so.  I don’t–I’ve never supported criminalization of abortion for mothers, but I do for people who perform them.  I believe that life is sacred.  It’s one of those things in the Declaration of Independence.  We are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights, and the first is life.  And I believe that that life should be protected at the moment it is a human life.  And at conception it is biologically human, and it’s alive.  It’s a human life, it should be a person under the Constitution.

(Conveniently found in transcript format here)

Numerous times throughout this statement you oppose abortion with the justification of personal belief. While you are certainly entitled to whatever it is you wish to believe in, it is horrible to wish to impose this upon someone who, without an abortion, may suffer emotional trauma as the result of giving birth the a child of rape or incest.

The Declaration of Independence was drafted before the establishment of our lawful government, and therefore is not a law, but rather an assertion. Even so,

…that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Life. How does one define life? You believe that life begins at the moment of conception, but as a fetus cannot live independently from it’s mother until well into a pregnancy, many others do not define it as such.

While relying on the nurture of a mother’s body, it is a woman’s right to have the option of an abortion, and the doctor performing such an action should not be penalized for doing such- especially not in situations of rape or incest.

Your statements disgust and sadden me, and I hope you recognize that it is not just to allow your personal beliefs and emotions to infringe upon the rights of others.

Sincerely,

Eli

Open Letter to Swain County Commissioners

13 Jun

To whom it may concern:

Today, some rather disturbing quotes, generally by county commissioners, were brought to my attention. Specifically, one made by Mr. Monteith made regarding his opposition to condoms on the grounds of his religion. While I respect your right to believe whatever you wish, I do not respect that because of this you feel it is just to infringe upon one’s right to be aware of health care services, including- but not limited to- the free availability of condoms.

A health department report from last year stated that nearly 50% of high school students in Swain report to have, or have previously had, sex. According to Health Department Director Linda White, the state rate for pregnancy ages 15-17 from 2005-09 was 33.6%. It was 42% in Swain.

Approximately 16% of the population in Swain lives below the poverty line.

To wish to deny one the right to know about free services, which Swain evidently needs according to statistics, is a horrible, foul, and grievous action by figures of authority. No one is justified in infringing upon another’s right based upon what they personally believe.

The department has made free condoms available for 30 years, it’s about time it was publicized.

Sincerely,
Eli
